Recently, a research team from a leading university in South Korea successfully deployed Nutech 2703 portable air sampler in a high-altitude atmospheric VOC monitoring campaign, demonstrating the sampler’s reliability and flexibility under airborne research conditions.

In this study, the research team conducted high-altitude ambient air sampling onboard an aircraft to investigate the vertical distribution and characteristics of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the upper atmosphere. A total of four Model 2703 samplers were installed inside the aircraft cabin, each connected to a 6-liter SUMMA canister for whole-air sample collection.

To maximize sampling efficiency and temporal coverage during flight, the four samplers were operated in a sequential sampling mode. After the first sampler completed its programmed collection, the next sampler automatically took over, allowing continuous air sampling throughout different flight stages and altitudes. This relay-style operation ensured stable sampling performance while minimizing manual intervention during flight.

The Model 2703 sampler provided precise flow control, auto start and stop via timer function, simple operation via mobile App, operation by built-in batter which are critical requirements for airborne sampling where cabin pressure, vibration, and environmental conditions can vary significantly. The collected samples were subsequently analyzed using laboratory-based GC-MS systems for detailed VOC speciation and concentration analysis.

According to the research team, the compact design, operational stability, and compatibility with SUMMA canisters made the Nutech 2703 porable air sampler well suited for aircraft-based atmospheric research applications. The successful deployment further demonstrates the instrument’s applicability not only in ground-based environmental monitoring, but also in advanced atmospheric research scenarios such as high-altitude and mobile platform sampling.

This application highlights the growing role of robust whole-air sampling solutions in atmospheric chemistry research and supports the continued use of Nutech 2703 portable air sampler in scientific studies requiring reliable VOC sampling under demanding conditions.
